Online reputation terms, explained in one sentence

Brief, quotable definitions of the concepts we use at PosRank and that appear in conversations about reviews, satisfaction and search visibility.

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)
Practices designed to get AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews to mention and recommend a brand when someone asks about its category.
Unlike SEO, it focuses on being included in a written answer rather than ranking in a list. It depends mainly on reviews, third-party directories and content that answers questions.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
Optimizing a website and its external presence to appear in organic search results on engines such as Google.
It includes content, technical structure, structured data, speed and links from other websites. Reviews and directory profiles are part of off-page SEO.
Related: GEO, Local SEO, Structured data
Local SEO
Work aimed at appearing in searches with geographic intent, such as near me or in a particular city, mainly in Google Maps and the local results pack.
A Google Business Profile, recent reviews with replies and consistent name, address and phone information are its main factors.
Related: SEO, Google listing
Google AI Overviews
An AI-generated summary that Google displays above organic results for many searches, with source citations.
Appearing in that summary requires being one of the sources Google considers reliable for the query.

NPS (Net Promoter Score)
A satisfaction metric that subtracts the percentage of detractors, scoring 0 to 6, from promoters, scoring 9 or 10, in response to how likely are you to recommend us? It ranges from -100 to +100.
Scores of 7 and 8 are passive and do not count. The metric is more useful when a comment explains the reason behind each score.

eNPS (Employee Net Promoter Score)
The employee version of NPS: how likely someone is to recommend the company as a workplace.
Related: NPS
Promoter
A person who answers 9 or 10 in an NPS survey, indicating a high likelihood of recommending the business.
Related: NPS, Detractor
Detractor
A person who answers 0 to 6 in an NPS survey, indicating likely dissatisfaction and a risk of public negative reviews.
Related: NPS, Promoter
Verified review
Feedback whose authorship and real experience have been checked: confirmed identity or contact, use of the product or service, and publication by the reviewer themselves.
In PosRank, each first-party review verifies the email with a code, declares the relationship as customer or employee and indicates whether a reward was offered.
Related: Incentivized review, Review gating
Incentivized review
Feedback for which a reward was offered for participating. It is allowed only when the channel permits it, it is not conditional on the rating and it is disclosed alongside the review.
Google, Amazon and Yelp prohibit incentives; some B2B directories allow them when disclosed.
Related: Verified review
Review gating
The practice of asking only satisfied customers for public reviews, after filtering out dissatisfied customers. Google and most platforms prohibit it.
The appropriate alternative is to measure satisfaction privately with NPS and invite everyone equally to share public feedback.
Related: NPS, Verified review
Google listing (Business Profile)
A free business profile on Google Maps and Search, with opening hours, photos, reviews and a direct link to leave a rating.
Related: Local SEO
Structured data (schema.org)
Markup in a page's code that describes its content in a format search engines and AI models understand: organization, article, frequently asked questions and ratings.
It enables rich results, such as stars and questions, and helps AI engines confirm what a business is and how it is rated.
Related: SEO, GEO
llms.txt
A text file at a website's root summarizing what the site is and its key pages, intended for language models and their crawlers.

Review widget
A component installed on a website to invite visitors to leave feedback or answer a survey at the right time and on the right page.
Related: NPS, Verified review
TrustScore
The 1-to-5 score Trustpilot calculates for a business from its reviews, considering recency and volume.
Related: Verified review
Reputation as a customer
The assessment suppliers, agencies, freelancers and partners make of a business as a buyer: on-time payments, transparency, communication and honoring agreements. PosRank is the only review platform that measures and publishes it in a separate category from customer and employee feedback.
Related: Partner NPS, Suppliers and partners
Partner NPS
The version of NPS aimed at suppliers and business partners: the likelihood, from 0 to 10, of recommending a business as a client to another company. In PosRank, it is converted to stars and contributes to client reputation.
Related: NPS, eNPS, Reputation as a customer
Suppliers and partners (category)
One of the three feedback categories on a PosRank profile, alongside customers and employees: people who sell to or collaborate with the business rate its behavior as a client. It has its own star rating, count and NPS, without rewards.
Related: Reputation as a customer, Verified review
